The EightandaHalf is an art institution, an art space, an art house, a cultural melting pot, which, although involuntarily but tirelessly, makes impossible any attempt to define itself from within or to categorise what comes from outside. The retirement of the former interurban telephone exchange in Józsefváros as an industrial building has set in motion a series of coincidences and unexpected encounters, as a result of which the former server rooms have become workshops, studios, rehearsal rooms, studios and creative spaces.
Our aim is for the EightandaHalf to become not only perhaps the most distinctive building in the district, but also to fulfil its current function and become an integral part of the city. It is a House where artists from different artistic disciplines can find not only the space best suited to their activities, but also a safe space and a community where the diverse personalities and activities of its members can reinforce and inspire each other, whether through indirect influences or concrete collaborations.
But the EightandaHalf does not want to function as an enchanted castle for artists and cultural practitioners, isolated and inaccessible, but as a space where everyone, with the help of our team members and in close collaboration with them, contributes as much as they can and takes as much as they want or need.
