Where is the oral tradition, where are the unknown authors?
“When” was that “once upon a time” and “where” was that “land far, far away?”
Who were those who “lived happily ever after”?
In the immortal world of folk tales, everything is wonderful, unexpected and incredible. The peculiarly closed, constantly self-repeating operation of storytelling guarantees both the eternity and the eternal inaccessibility of those who exist within its framework.
The genre characteristics of the folktale are determined by the practice of oral transmission of stories, the communal nature of sharing and receiving them, and its closely intertwined relationship with folk tradition. Folktale telling - as long as it is not a faithful performance of a recorded version of a selected folktale - results in the re-creation and rebirth of the chosen tale every time. This process guarantees the organic survival of the genre.
The presence of folktale tradition, moving away from the designated area of cultural activities, beyond its intangible borders, can also be found in the seemingly most remote segments of culture, not only in concrete references or clear inspirational influences, but also in very abstract forms of appearance.
The group exhibition Éltek, míg meg nem haltak… / Lived ever after… does not undertake or aim to place the genre of the folktale in a historical or theoretical context, nor to map its forms and aspects in fine art. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the curators and the twenty-three artists they invited to work on the theme of the Hungarian folktale - a selection of the works created by them, which either directly recall the pictorial world and atmosphere of the richly and diversely illustrated folktale collections, or revive their recurring themes and motifs which are indirectly related to them in other ways.
